Piano removals in Bournemouth

Piano removals in Bournemouth, on their own or as part of a house or flat move. A piano is heavy, top-heavy and easily knocked out of shape, so the price depends on the model and the route out of the building. Send us those details and we reply with a written quote.

Which piano

Upright and grand pianos are different jobs

The type of piano decides the kit, the crew size and how it travels in the van.

Upright pianos

Uprights, including older overstrung models and modern digital uprights, move standing on their back on a padded dolly. The weight sits high and towards the back, so they tip easily on a slope or a step. They are wrapped in blankets, strapped upright in the van and kept away from other furniture. Height matters in tight hallways and on turning stairs, so measure it.

Grand and baby grand pianos

A grand cannot go through a normal doorway on its legs. The lid and legs come off, the pedal lyre is removed, and the body is turned on its straight side onto a padded piano board, then strapped and wheeled out. It needs more planning, more people and more room to turn. Tell us the length of the instrument if you know it.

Stairs and flats

Moving a piano in or out of a flat

Flats or maisonettes make up 49.1% of homes in the Bournemouth area (Dorset Council Insights, 2021 Census). That means many piano moves here involve a shared stairwell, a landing with a tight turn or a lift that may be too small.

  • Stairs: an upright is walked down one step at a time with people above and below it. Turns and half landings decide whether it fits at all.
  • Lifts: check the inside depth and the door width, and the stated weight limit. Some lifts are simply too small for an upright.
  • Shared areas: tell the managing agent or neighbours if the stairwell will be busy, and protect walls on narrow corners.
  • Outside steps: front steps and garden paths count as part of the route. A few steps can change what the crew brings.

If you are moving the rest of a flat at the same time, see flat removals in Bournemouth.

What the crew needs to know

A piano quote is only as good as the details behind it. These are the questions that change the price and the plan.

Make and model

The maker name is usually above the keys or inside the lid. Say if it is an upright, baby grand, grand or digital piano, and give the height or length if you can measure it.

Floor level at both ends

Ground floor, first floor, top floor. Say whether there is a lift at either address and roughly how big it is.

Steps and stairs

Count the steps outside and inside, and say if the stairs turn or have a half landing. Narrow or steep stairs are the most important detail.

Access width

Measure the narrowest doorway, hallway or gate on the route. Also say where the van can park and how far it is from the door.

Costs

Typical piano removal prices

Piano handling is usually priced as an extra on top of a move, or as a job of its own.

ItemTypical price
Piano or safe handling£200 to £700

Typical UK prices from the BestBuilders 2026 UK removals price guide. Where your move sits in that range depends on the piano and the route: stairs, a grand piano or a long carry take more time and more people. Your written quote is based on your own move. Full figures are in our removal costs guide.

On the day

How a piano move usually goes

  1. Prepare the room

Clear a path to the door, close and lock the lid if it has a key, and take off anything on top of the piano.

  2. Wrap and secure

The piano is covered in blankets and strapped. For a grand, legs, lid and pedals are removed and packed separately.

  3. Move and load

It is wheeled, carried or walked down the route, then strapped upright in the van so it cannot shift.

  4. Place it

At the new home it goes where you want it, ideally on an inside wall away from radiators and direct sun.

After the move

Tuning and settling in

Even a careful move changes the conditions a piano sits in: a different room, different heating, a different level of damp in the air. Tuning after a move is generally advised as part of letting the instrument settle in its new home. Ask your tuner when they suggest booking it.

Movers handle the transport, not the tuning. If you want the piano checked, book a piano tuner separately once it is in place.

Parking at the old and new address

A piano needs the van close to the door. In restricted streets, BCP Council runs a different parking scheme in each former council area, aimed at contractors and tradespeople. Removals are not mentioned, so check with the council whether your scheme covers your move. See the BCP Council parking permits index.

Questions

Common questions about piano removals

How much does it cost to move a piano in Bournemouth?

The BestBuilders 2026 UK removals price guide gives a typical range of £200 to £700 for piano or safe handling. Where your move falls depends on the type of piano, the stairs and steps at each address, the door widths and how far the van can park from the door. Your written quote is based on those details.

Is moving a grand piano different from an upright?

Yes. An upright moves standing on a padded dolly. A grand has its lid, legs and pedal lyre removed, then the body is turned on its straight side onto a padded piano board and strapped. Grands usually need more people and more room to turn.

Can a piano be moved up or down stairs to a flat?

Usually, yes, but the stairs decide how. Turning stairs, half landings and narrow doorways matter most. Flats or maisonettes are 49.1% of dwellings in the Bournemouth area, so tell us the floor at both addresses and whether there is a lift and how big it is.

What information do you need for a piano quote?

The make and model, whether it is upright, grand, baby grand or digital, the floor level at each address, the number of steps inside and out, the narrowest door or hallway on the route, and where the van can park.

Should my piano be tuned after the move?

Tuning after a move is generally advised as a settling-in step, because the piano is now in a different room with different heating and humidity. Ask your piano tuner when they recommend booking it. Tuning is arranged separately from the move.

Can you move a piano on its own, without a full house move?

Yes. A piano can be moved on its own or as part of a house or flat move. Say which in the quote form so the price covers the right crew and van.

How should I prepare the room before the piano is moved?

Clear a path from the piano to the door, take everything off the top, close the lid and lock it if it has a key. At the new home, decide where it will stand, ideally on an inside wall away from radiators and direct sun.
